SIM card and internet in Uzbekistan for tourists: eSIM, operators, prices (2026)

Maps, taxi apps and translation all need data, and hotel Wi-Fi is not always reliable, so sort out your connection before or right after you land.

Two ways to get online

OptionGood forWatch out for
eSIM (buy online before the trip)Connected the moment you land, no queue, no passport at a shopUsually pricier per GB; your phone must support eSIM
Local SIM (airport or operator shop)Cheapest data, best local coveragePassport registration; airport desk may be closed on night arrivals

Local operators and approximate prices

Prices change often, so treat these as a rough guide (around spring 2026):

OperatorTypical packageStrength
Ucellabout $6 for 5 GBcheap, solid in cities
Uztelecomabout $10 for 10 GBbest coverage in remote areas
Beelineabout $12 for 15 GB plus social mediafast in cities; staff more used to foreigners
Mobiuzabout $15 for 20 GBbalanced for longer stays

Buying a local SIM

  1. Bring your passport: foreigners must register the SIM, and shops will copy it.
  2. The easiest place is the operator desk at Tashkent airport; the desk may be closed at night, so have an eSIM or roaming as a backup.
  3. City shops can be cheaper, but staff may speak only Uzbek and Russian. Have the plan name or price written down.
  4. Activation usually takes a few minutes, occasionally a few hours.
  5. If you stay longer than a month, ask the operator whether your phone needs to be registered (IMEI); rules for long stays have changed over time.

eSIM

  • Regional and global eSIM apps (such as Airalo, Holafly or GigSky) sell Uzbekistan plans; small data packs start at a few dollars, and unlimited plans cost much more.
  • Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land.
  • Check that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.

Useful tips

  • Public Wi-Fi in cafés and hotels is often slow, so keep mobile data on for maps and your taxi app.
  • Download offline maps of the cities you will visit, and the Uzbek or Russian language pack for your translator.
  • Many guides and small businesses answer on Telegram, so install it.
  • In UzGidAI you can use the phrasebook offline, but asking the guide needs internet.

Questions and answers

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Uzbekistan?

Yes. Foreigners must register a physical SIM with their passport at the operator's desk or shop. An eSIM bought online avoids the shop visit.

Which operator is best for tourists in Uzbekistan?

Beeline is a common choice in cities because staff are used to foreigners; Uztelecom has the best coverage in remote areas; Ucell is the budget option. All are fine for the main tourist cities.

Is an eSIM or a local SIM better?

An eSIM is easier because you are online the moment you land. A local SIM is cheaper per GB. Many travellers buy an eSIM for the first days and a local SIM later if they stay long.
